Mirassou Wine Tasting

I love wine.  But, I wouldn’t call myself a wine person.  I know practically nothing about the subject other than the fact that I like to drink it.  That’s why I was particularly excited to be invited to a Mirassou wine tasting event at Stephen Pyles.  The food was fantastic, as expected.  The wine was the big surprise of the evening for me.

First of all, I was anticipating that the wine would be expensive.  It’s not.  It’s very reasonable.  The suggested retail price per bottle is $12.  We started with Pinot Grigio and worked our way through Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Riesling.  There wasn’t one of them that I didn’t love.  Pair them all with a separate course designed to accompany the wine and I was in heaven.

Stephen Pyles was even there through our event.  He chatted with folks, answered questions and, of course, kept an eye on the kitchen.  The kitchen where our meal was prepared was open to the room where we dined.  Our host was David Mirassou.  David represents the sixth generation of the Mirassou family.  They are the oldest winemaking family in America, in operation for over 150 years.  David visted for a while with each table and interjected stories to the group throughout the evening.  He was very charming and fun to listen to.

So, did I learn a ton about wines?  Yes.  But, knowing myself for over 40 years now, I am quite sure that I’ll forget a lot of the specific facts.  What I won’t forget is that I found a line of wines that I can think of as a go to brand.  I don’t have to wonder if I’ll like it or if it will be too heavy or sweet or oaky.  These wines were none of that.  Every single offering was easy to drink and went great with our food.  Now I don’t have to guess at what to purchase.  I’ll just get the Mirassou.  And at that price, I bet I’ll be buying it a lot!

  1. Right on target! The way to find what wines you like is to try them. Check out Trader Joe’s for some great, inexpensive wines from Napa and Sonoma.

  2. Margie, the dinner was off-the-charts fantastic, and the wine fabulous, but I can honestly say that the highlight of my evening was seeing you and Hubbard again after all this time. Hope to see you again soon!
