We’ve only been to Mextopia once and I left with mixed feelings about it.  The dining room is great.  Nicely decorated and more modern than most Mexican food places.  The drinks were good.  But, the food… 

It wasn’t bad.  I usually like to try a chile relleno when I go to a new Mexican food restaurant.  This one was a little odd because the pepper wasn’t fried.  It tasted pretty good.  But, it was basically just a poblano with a handful of cheese in it that went into the microwave.  Well, it looked like he was sticking it in the microwave.

The microwave was right there beside the window to the kitchen.  Right up front.  Why?  I really don’t want to think of going out to eat just to have something that was nuked.  I’m sure restaurants use them all the time.  But, I don’t want to actually see the thing.

Another thing that kind of bothered me was the fact that the salad was in the middle of the plate surrounded by beans and relleno sauce.  And the beans were basically flavorless.  A little better with hot sauce all over them.  The website said the 2nd entree would be half price all day on Mondays.  That didn’t happen when we got the check.  It also said happy hour was 3-7.  When we got there, it was only happy hour at the bar.  I thought that was a little strange.  They did have $5 margaritas that they served at the table.  They were actually very good.  So was my Dreamcicle shot.

I wanted to like it more.  Hubbard said his combination plate was fine.  I guess I’ll have to give it another try later.

  1. I’ve been wanting to try this place. Does anybody know who the other nine of the top ten places are? On the website they say the relleno is roasted. You say it was good though, so-maybe, but not cool if they are just microwaving it. In either case I agree with not wanting to see the microwave.

  3. Thanks for eating with us. We don’t microwave our entrees. Our Chili Relleno is freshly roasted. If the waiter got your bill wrong… please say something next time. You actually received Happy Hour pricing on your Margaritas!

  5. I’m going to have to check this place out. It’s all I’ve been hearing about lately. You said that the margaritas were priced at $5 for happy hour. Are they regular or Top Shelf?

    Please, please, do NOT support this restaurant. I have NEVER received such terrible service and treatment at a restaurant.

    I had never been to Mextopia and was excited to try it, as I had heard great things about it. Within 1 minute of sitting down at our table, an entire tray of full water glasses was dropped on top of me, drenching me entirely from my shoulders to my knees. My hair was wet, my entire shirt was soaking and my lap was soaking and covered in ice. Needless to say it was freezing cold and very uncomfortable. The person that spilled the waters not once apologized, but instead looked at me and chuckled. He brought over a few napkins to wipe off the table and then disappeared. We waited for about 5 minutes for somebody to come over and apologize, offer a towel, make sure everything was ok, or at the very least, take our drink order. NOTHING. I sat shivering at the table waiting for some sort of help, a towel or an apology. Finally, I had to approach the hostess (who was watching this all happen and not once came over to check on us) and ask for someone to take our drink order. I am enraged that I did not receive one apology before seeking somebody out myself and was left to sit in my chair with no towel or apology for 5 minutes. It is absolutely ridiculous that not a single person apologized to me and that I had to get up from my table to get somebody’s attention. The part that makes me really upset is not that I had water spilled on me, but the fact that I had to seek out help and not a single person had approached the table to apologize to me after 5 minutes of waiting.

    I sent the above email to the Owner, Ricardo Avila, and he emailed me back, pretty much saying that I am ridiculous and that his staff did the right thing. ARE YOU SERIOUS?! I am absolutely APPALLED by the service I received and even more so at the response from the owner.
